Writing A Better Online Dating Profile

Between today’s hectic schedules and the increasing availability of dating websites touting compatibility screenings, online dating is losing some of its stigma and becoming a common method for searching for a mate. While it’s great that online daters can come out of the closet with their proactive quests for mates, it also means that the competition is growing as more people sign up. In order to stand out and get the responses you want, creating a unique and intriguing profile is an important first step.

While there is no standard formula that works for all profiles, following these tips will help get you noticed:

v     DO post several recent photos. While photos from ten years ago may get you more notice, you don’t want your date’s first impression to be one of disappointment when the photo doesn’t match the person in front of her. Use photos that were taken within the last year and show you in a wide variety of activities and from different angles.

v     DON’T write an overly negative profile. Think instead of positive statements. Turn “no crazy chicks” into “seeking stability” and “not looking for one night stands” into “seeking commitment-minded”.

v     DO know what really matters to you. If you have any absolutes, list them. Maybe it’s important to you to date someone of your same faith or ethnicity, or that your potential mate love animals. Say so.

v     DON’T state the obvious. Does anyone not love fun? Is anyone looking for a drama-filled relationship?

v     DO check out the competition. Almost every guy describes himself as “laid back”. What different qualities do you bring to the table?

v     DON’T just say it, show it. Rather than saying you’re funny, write something humorous. Don’t just write about your love of travel, describe a favorite adventure.

v     DO undersell, overdeliver. Adding inches to your height or describing yourself as an athlete because you played football in high school only sets yourself up to disappoint your date. Honestly and accurately describe some of your attributes, and leave some fun details to be shared on your date.

Being attractive may find you a date; creating a well-written, accurate profile will help you find a mate. If you want a one-night stand, a few hot pix and a sentence will do. For something more serious, invest some time in crafting a real description of who you are and the qualities you seek.

Knoxville's Best Date Restaurants

While there’s no shortage of franchise restaurants in Knoxville, there are also some great eateries with more unique offerings that make for a great date. If you don’t yet know your date’s predilections, be sure to discuss food preferences/issues/allergies first*. Otherwise, whether it’s a first date or an anniversary celebration, these restaurants are sure to make a good impression.

1. Savelli’s, 3055 Sutherland Avenue

If you’re lucky enough to be the person who introduces your date to Savelli’s, you’ll score automatic points. It’s the perfect match of convenient location with hideaway feel. The cozy atmosphere is perfect for intimate conversation. BYO wine (small cork fee) and delicious Italian fare at reasonable prices are the pièce de résistance.

2. Bistro by the Tracks,
   215 Brookview Centre Drive

It hasn’t been by the tracks in years, and its latest strip mall location really cost it some ambiance, but this is still one of the best meals you’ll find in Knoxville. A little on the pricey side for this area, it’s worth the extra cash for the gourmet menu with amazing chef’s specials.

3. Barley’s, 200 E. Jackson Avenue

Pizza is a date night staple, but Pizza Hut doesn’t exactly impress. Barley’s has a nice variety of toppings for your pie, as well as an impressive beer selection.

4. Wasabi,
   226 Lovell Road
   and
   118 Major Reynolds Place

I personally don’t care for Japanese food (*see note above), but a good friend says Wasabi is the best. Hibachi grill dining is sure to entertain, but be warned that you don’t get to pick your tablemates. For those wanting more privacy or a faster meal, opt for the sushi bar.

5. Cairo Café/The Mirage,
   718 South Gay Street

Not the best menu in town, but how can you not have a great time on a date that can involve sitting on pillows and smoking almost any flavor hookah you desire? Check ahead to make sure it’s a night when belly dancers will be entertaining.

6. Pelancho’s, 1516 Downtown West Boulevard

Even though there are approximately eight billion Mexican restaurants in Knoxville, none are especially authentic or special. Pelancho’s gets my vote for date night for its decent menu, dog-friendly patio, and close proximity to Regal Downtown West. You need somewhere nearby to discuss the crazy art flick you just saw.

7. Café
   Four, 4 Market Square

Market Square offers lots of great choices these days. Café Four has a few special features, including its upstairs cozy lounge seating, amazing cupcakes and truffle fries, and great shows in the Square Room.

8. Lakeside Tavern,
   10911 Concord Park Drive

Lakeside has a similar menu to its sister restaurant, Parkside Grill, but with a much better atmosphere. The restaurant is a little out of the way, but takes full advantage of its great views with huge windows and patio seating.

9. Bonefish Grill, 6610 Kingston Pike or
   11395 Parkside Drive

Okay, this is a chain, but we’re too far inland to get better seafood than this. Bang bang shrimp and great martinis also make for a good start to a date.

10. Ye Olde Steakhouse, 6838 Chapman Highway

If you like steak, this is the place to go. Period. Though it’s a little isolated, it certainly is no secret. If you go on game day or any day with a special event in downtown Knox, expect a crowd big enough to warrant their own traffic director.
